The Shelter for Urban Homeless (SUH) in Kattappana is a Central Government of India supported programme to provide shelter, equipped with basic infrastructure facilities and essential services, to the urban poor under the DeendayalAntyodaya Yojana – National Urban Livelihoods Mission (DAY-NULM). This initiative of the Kattappana Municipality is part of the Urban Local Body’s Sustainable Development Plan drafted for the town taking into account its population of the poor, destitute and homeless. The rehabilitation project is to be implemented by the State Poverty Eradication Mission – KUDUMBASHREE (in Kerala).

The shelter home in Kattappana is proposed within a land parcel of about 20 cents owned by the Kattappana Municipality in Pezhumkavala, Kattappana. The building is designed to accommodate 42 male inmates with provision for beds, toilets, lobby, kitchen and dining, sick room, prayer room, learning and leisure spaces etc. It also ensures sufficient natural lighting, ventilation, personal storage spaces, and facilities for fire protection and rain water harvesting. The three-storey building has a total area of13541sq.ft.and the total project cost is estimated to be Rs. 3,35, Crore. .
